Our Practice and Treatment Room Nurses are qualified and registered nurses. They can help with issues such as family planning and healthy living advice, as well as carrying out blood pressure checks, dressings, cervical smears and blood tests. The Practice Nurse also carries out routine reviews of all our patients with long-term health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease etc.  If you have asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and you feel that your symptoms could be better controlled than at present, please do not hesitate to book in with the Nurse for further advice in the first instance.

Our Receptionists provide an important link with the practice and are your initial contact point for all general enquiries. They can provide basic information on services and results, and direct you to the right person depending on your health issue or query.

Andrew, Lauren and Steph make up our Pharmacy team, and look after a large part of our prescribing work.  In addition, Andrew runs a clinic every Monday afternoon for our patients with asthma and/or COPD.  Patients can book in with him for a comprehensive review of their medication and inhaler technique, and generally improve the control of their conditions.

District Nurses provide a wide range of general nursing services to patients who are housebound due to temporary or permanent medical conditions.  You may be referred to the service by your GP, your hospital team, or you may indeed refer yourself directly if you think that there is something that they can help with.  Our District Nurses work collectively from Leith Community Treatment Centre and they can be contacted directly on 0131 536 6206.

A health visitor is a registered nurse who has received training particularly related to babies, children and pregnant women. Their role is to provide families with children under five years old with support and advice around the general aspects of mental, physical and social wellbeing. Our Leith Health Visiting Team is based at 165a Leith Walk, and can be contacted directly on 0131 454 2306.

Fiona Begg 

MSc BSc(Hons) MCSP

Fiona is our GP Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP), and she now works in the Practice on Tuesday mornings, and all-day Wednesdays. If you have, or think you have, a musculoskeletal (MSK) problem she provides an alternative to speaking to your GP.

Fiona provides expert assessment of all MSK conditions (eg muscle, bone and joint problems), such as back, neck, shoulder or knee pain. She can provide you with a clinical diagnosis, give you advice on how to manage the problem, and suggest appropriate exercise for you to work on independently.

With your agreement and when appropriate, Fiona can refer you to specialist services, such as physiotherapy for supported rehab, x-ray or orthopaedics, and, if necessary,  she can liaise with your GP to arrange medication or discuss any non-MSK symptoms which may have been found during your consultation.

You can book appointments with Fiona directly via Reception, in the same way as you would book a GP or nurse appointment.  Our Reception team has also been trained to identify problems that might be better addressed by an APP, so they may suggest seeing Fiona rather than one of the GPs.   Additionally, your GP may, after speaking to you, recognize that your issue needs an expert MSK opinion, and ask you to book a consultation with Fiona.

Josh Owen-Gorza

Josh is our mental health nurse (MHN), and works in the Practice Tuesday to Friday, but his exact clinic days and times alter from week to week.  He is a registered mental health nurse and provides expert assessment and treatment of all types of adult mental health problems.  When appropriate, he can refer you onwards to specialist mental health services if he feels your problem needs that level of care. Josh should be your first port of call for all adult mental health issues, unless you are looking for an ADHD diagnosis. In that case, our Reception team will advise you how to take things forward from the point of first contact with us. 

You can book face to face appointments with Josh directly, via Reception, and you do not need to speak to a GP first.  

Amalia Skamagkouli is our CLW, and she can help you find services, organisations, groups, and activities that may help your health and wellbeing. She can offer a series of meetings and is able to chat about anything that is non-medical.

Community Link Workers use social prescribing to help you have more control over your life and the things that matter to you.  Social prescribing is a way of helping you manage your wellbeing by connecting you with local resources.

Many things can affect your wellbeing including, housing, money worries and problems with your family.  Amalia is here to listen and help you make changes. She can put you in touch with people and activities that might help you feel better and improve your wellbeing. She can offer you short-term support with:

• Thinking about positive steps to move forward
• Finding services that you might find useful and helping you to access them
• Introducing you to groups and services, and going along with you the first few times

Anyone aged 16 or over can speak to Amalia, so if this seems like something that would be helpful, you can ask anyone in the Practice Team that you're seeing to make a referral to her.  Alternatively, just give our Reception Team and call and they'll also be happy to do it for you.   Once Amalia has your referral, she'll get in contact with you to take things forward.
